This part of the project gives younger children a wonderful opportunity to work with very small numbers, developing key concepts and skills such as subitising, part-part-whole, one more, one less etc.
Children are given many experiences aimed to develop mental representations of number. They learn to talk about the equations they are creating and once they can do this they are ready to explore ways of recording their findings.
At this stage we can introduce mathematical symbols because the children will already have developed a genuine and meaningful understanding of the concepts they represent.
Little Lightning Bolts:
- Starts with numbers to 3
- Helps children develop visual representations of number
- Is based on practical activities, talking and doing.
- Develops early number sense
- Introduces mathematical symbols
